Planting trees to break the cycle of climate-induced poverty in Africa
WHY WE EXIST
Changing rainfall patterns are devastating the lives of African farmers. Even worse, to survive droughts, farmers often turn to deforestation to feed their families. Kijani partners with farmers to plant millions of trees to provide sustainable livelihoods and reverse deforestation. We plant trees to break the cycle of climate-induced poverty in Africa.
Our Mission
Planting tens of millions of trees to break the cycle of poverty for smallholder farmers in East Africa.
Nursery Hub Model
We have established a network of nurseries in rural communities where we partner with communities who are interested in planting trees in an agroforestry ecosystem. We provide training, tree seedlings, and access to markets for agroforestry products to holistically improve the lives of the partners we work with. We plant indigenous, fast growing fuelwood, timber, fruit, and fodder trees to increase climate resilience for tens of thousands of farmers.
Ecosystem Restoration
We are beginning to reforest 5,000 ha of land to improve biodiversity, climate resilience, and increase local livelihoods. Uganda’s forests have been depleted due to subsistence agriculture, charcoal production and poverty. We will employ local communities to plant, protect, manage, and monitor reforestation on large 1000ha+ plots of private land that has been leased for restoration purposes, using a combination of native species for rewilding, intercropping to address food security, and supporting community agroforestry to reduce pressure on existing forests and project future forests.
